How effective our communication?

A one-on-one call with your Career Advisor is a dedicated time for focused communication, typically scheduled regularly. It’s a crucial opportunity to build rapport, discuss work-related matters, and foster professional growth. Effective one-on-ones require preparation from both the advisor and the internship trainee to ensure productive and valuable conversations.

Preparation for a one-on-one call:

As a Trainee:

  • Review past meetings: Reflect on the previous one-on-one and any action items or topics discussed.
  • Prepare talking points: Identify key topics, achievements, challenges, and questions for your advisor.
  • Focus on results: Highlight accomplishments and their impact, rather than just tasks completed.
  • Consider career development: Think about your professional goals and how your advisor can support your growth.

As an Advisor:

Set clear goals: Define the purpose of the meeting and what you hope to achieve.

Prepare agenda: Outline the topics to be discussed, but remain flexible for unexpected issues.

Be present and engaged: Actively listen and provide constructive feedback.

Offer support and guidance: Help employees address challenges and develop their skills.

Key elements of a productive one-on-one:

  • Open communication: Encourage open and honest dialogue, creating a safe space for discussion.
  • Active listening: Pay attention to both verbal and non-verbal cues, and ask clarifying questions.
  • Feedback and recognition: Provide constructive feedback and acknowledge employee contributions.
  • Goal alignment: Ensure alignment on goals and priorities, and address any roadblocks.
  • Future planning: Discuss career development, training opportunities, and long-term goals.

By actively preparing for and participating in one-on-one calls, both advisors and trainees can maximize their effectiveness, build stronger relationships, and drive professional growth.
